FNIDCR Applauds Senate Effort to Request Sustained NIH Investment
Senator Robert Casey (D-PA) and Senator Richard Burr (R-NC) led a bipartisan effort to secure backing from their colleagues in the U.S. Senate to request appropriators to continue investment in medical research at National Institutes of Health (NIH) for FY2012. The two senators circulated a letter that garnered support from 41 senators for this request. The June 10, 2011 letter was sent to Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor-HHS-Education Chairman Tom Harkin, Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor-HHS-Education Ranking Member Richard Shelby, Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Daniel Inouye and Senate Appropriations Committee Vice Chairman Thad Cochran.
"The Friends of NIDCR applauds the initiative of Senator Casey and Burr," FNIDCR President Dr. Christian Stohler said. "The letter presents excellent points that support why sustained investment is beneficial to Americans. As the appropriations process moves forward, we must do our part to educate Congress about the importance of properly funding medical research."
President Stohler added, "We appreciate the backing of all forty-one senators who signed the letter. The strong bipartisan showing is evidence that support for research spans across party lines."
