NIDCR/ARRA Funding Update
NIDCR received $101,819,000 from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) to fund oral and craniofacial research in fiscal years 2009 and 2010. As of September 30, 2009, NIDCR has spent or committed to spend 97% of those funds primarily through a variety of extramural grants. This pie chart shows a breakdown of NIDCR’s ARRA investment.

The largest percentage (30%) of our ARRA funding went to payline extensions – the funding of applications that were outside of our normal base appropriation payline. The Challenge Grant (RC1) and Grand Opportunities “GO” Grant (RC2) programs were funded with 23% and 12% of NIDCR ARRA funds, respectively. NIDCR used 10% to fund faculty recruitment through the P30 mechanism. Approximately 8.3% was used to expand the scope of science of existing grants through the peer reviewed Revision opportunity.

NIDCR also used 10% of the ARRA funds to support existing grants through administrative supplements. Each of these supplements underwent a rigorous review by our program and executive staff. The supplements allowed researchers to purchase new equipment, hire new employees, employ high school and college students and high school teachers in their labs for a summer, and increase the collaboration among scientists from different fields.

We also funded additional training (0.13%) and SBIR/STTR opportunities (0.32%). A decision was made NIH-wide to allow the use of approximately 0.5% of ARRA resources to purchase equipment the intramural program.  In addition, we used ~1.1% of our resources to support ARRA implementation.

Approximately 2% of NIDCR’s ARRA funding remains for use in FY 2010 to support programs including the Catalyst Award (R43), BRDG-SPAN (RC3), Community-Linked Health Science Research (RC4), and AREA Awards (R15).
