NIH Director Update: Zerhouni Assumes Leadership Of The National Institutes Of Health
On May 20, 2002, Elias Adam Zerhouni, MD, began as the new Director of the NIH, the world's foremost medical research
institution. Dr. Zerhouni is a well-respected leader in the field of radiology and medicine. He brings impressive clinical,
scientific and administrative experience to his new role at the $23 billion federal agency. See FNIDCR web site

On May 2, the United States Senate confirmed the nomination of Dr. Elias Zerhouni as the 15th Director of the NIH.
Dr. Zerhouni's hearing and confirmation, one of the swiftest in recent history, was greeted with much anticipation and
excitement. When asked about his vision of the NIH and the role of the Director, Zerhouni said, "the most important
role of the [NIH] director right now is to reestablish morale and momentum, vision and energy to recruit NIH institute
directors and recruit into key positions that will make the agency even more effective."
House Committee Hears Testimony On Autism
Government disease experts April 18 described an agenda of expanding research into the causes and prevalence of autism
at a congressional hearing called to question the government's response to "an epidemic" of disease.

NIH Signs First International Stem Cell Research Agreement
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and ES Cell International have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for research
use of stem cell lines owned by ES Cell International. The six existing stem cell lines meet the criteria set by President
Bush in his August 9, 2001 address. This is the federal government's first international agreement involving the distribution
of human stem cell lines.
ES Cell International has also agreed to make stem cell lines available for use by non-profit institutions that receive NIH
grants. The lines will be available to these institutions under the same terms and conditions as those available to NIH
scientists, provided these institutions enter into a separate written agreement with ES Cell International. See:

ADA Opposes Dental Training Budget Cuts
The Association urged Congress to reject Bush administration budget cuts for oral health service and training programs providing
care for children and low income patients.

The National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering
(NIBIB), the newest funding institute of the National Institutes of Health, awarded its first research grants last week.
The grant recipients are Yale University School of Medicine, University of California at San Francisco, and Tribofilm
Research Inc. The NIBIB was established in December 2000 to support research that will improve health by promoting
fundamental discoveries, design and development, and translation and assessment of technological capabilities in biomedical
imaging and bioengineering. www.nibib.nih.gov
For the past month, the Surgeon General's Report on Oral Health listserv has been down. The primary purpose of this listserv
is the sharing of information about ideas, programs, policies, materials, legislation, activities, plans, and events related
to what is working, what is promising, and what is not working to improve the oral health of the public, specifically with
regards to the Surgeon General's Report on Oral Health. Unfortunately, the organization that hosts the website of the
Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors deleted this list. To renew your membership in the list contact:

E-mail Service Announces New Government Health Care Publications
"New Titles by Topic Email Alert Service," a new program launched by the U.S. Government Printing Office, will notify
subscribers via e-mail about the latest health care titles as soon as they are available for purchase. Publications
include consumer health guides, health research information, national statistics and surveys, training guides for health
care professionals, public health reports and health care laws and statutes.
